Joan Zipperer Calder, a Reedsville High School Graduate in 1965, will be reading her children’s book, Airplanes in the Garden Monarch Butterflies Take Flight to students in the summer reading program at Reedsville Elementary Middle School on June 22 at 8:00 a.m. The book will be available for purchase and she will be on hand for book signing after the reading.

Airplanes in the Garden Monarch Butterflies Take Flight is an easy read book for ages 4 - 8 and is an informative and entertaining book for children and parents. Bonnie, the young girl in this story, guides us through the four week long journey of how caterpillars in her garden become monarch butterflies. Captivating and imaginative watercolor artwork, depicting the life of a caterpillar, keeps a child’s attention while the story teaches the child (and parent) what a caterpillar requires to become a butterfly.

Calder, author, horticulturist, and garden designer, manages the campus greenhouse for ecology, evolution and marine biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Calder teaches garden design classes for the Santa Barbara City College continuing education program. She graduation from the University of Wisconsin with a BA in social work and received an AS degree in ornamental horticulture from Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California.
